Description
Four ranges of farm buildings, likely from the early 19th century, form a farmyard to the northwest of Blatchford Farmhouse. These buildings are constructed from granite and freestone rubble, with corrugated iron roofs that were previously thatched. The layout features the farmhouse as part of the southeast range, which includes an adjacent linhay with a hipped roof.
The southwest range consists of single-storey pigsties with a monopitch roof that is gabled at both ends. The northwest range is a threshing barn that includes a rear horse engine house and a linhay to the left; its roof is gabled at the right end and hipped at the left end. The northeast range serves as a shippon or stable with a loft above, featuring a hipped roof at the right end and a gabled roof at the left end.
In terms of exterior details, the single-storey pigsties are complemented by two-storey structures in the other ranges. The southeast range has two open-fronted bays on the left end and a stone front wall to the right of center, with timber doors on the ground floor to the left, a stone doorway with a segmental arch to the right of center, and one loft opening. The southwest range features five pigsty doorways on the front. The northwest range has three doorways on the left and is clad with corrugated iron above; the threshing barn includes one large doorway with a segmental arch, two windows to the right, and a loft opening above. The northeast range has four ground floor doorways with segmental arches, a loft door in the first bay from the left protected by a canopy, and a two-light loft opening to the right. Stone steps at the right end provide access to a loft doorway.
This attractive group of buildings is visible from the opposite bank of the River Teign and contributes significantly to the setting of Blatchford Farmhouse. It also holds group value with the buildings at Ashton Mill.
