Description

The Sampson headstone, erected in 1940, is located approximately 2 metres south-east of the vestry of the Church of the Holy Trinity. It commemorates William and Eva Sampson and incorporates a likely 15th-century cross. Made of granite, the headstone features a complete medieval cross that is a plain Latin cross, standing about 1.5 metres high with a tapering shaft. The corners of the cross are chamfered, and it has pyramid stops. The inscribed square socket stone notes the death of William Sampson in 1940 and his wife Eva in 1934. The couple lived at Greenaway Farm, the original location of the cross.
