Description

Hele Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has some fabric from the 17th century but has been significantly altered in the 19th century. The front wall is made of small blocks of granite ashlar, while the rear wall and wing are constructed from granite rubble, with the wing rendered. The roof is covered with asbestos slate, hipped to the left and gabled to the right, and there are three brick axial stacks. The layout of the house has been changed due to 19th-century remodeling, but it likely originally had a three-room plan with a through passage. The rear wing is probably from the 18th or 19th century, and there is a 19th-century rear outshut.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has five windows and a doorway towards the left end. The windows to the left of center are mid-19th-century two-light casements with small panes and pointed heads. The right-hand window on the ground floor has been converted into a door. In the center of this section is a gabled stone porch from the 20th century with a glazed door leading into the house. On the first floor to the right of center are two 20th-century two-light casements, and on the ground floor to the left is a 20th-century three-light casement with a single-light casement to the right, all featuring small panes. Towards the left end of the front is a date stone inscribed with "674" and the initials "R.G., M.G."

Inside, most features date from the 19th-century remodeling and include high-quality joinery such as panelled doors, cupboards, shutters, and a staircase with a curved handrail, carved spandrels, and curtail steps on either side. Some earlier features remain, including a large granite-framed fireplace in the right-hand room with roughly chamfered jambs and a lintel that has been partially hacked away to accommodate a Rayburn stove. Above this fireplace is a finely moulded half beam. One of the first-floor rooms also contains a granite-framed fireplace with a chamfered lintel and roll-moulded jambs. The roof space has not been inspected.
