Description

Bagtor Mill Cottage, also known as Lemon Cottage, is a house that was formerly a cottage, likely built in the late 17th century, with a late 20th-century addition. The structure is made of granite rubble and features a hipped thatched roof. To the left is an outhouse, and to the right is the 20th-century addition, which has a slated roof. At the rear left corner of the original cottage, there is a thick granite rubble chimneystack topped with a thin projecting stone course and four upright stones that are externally buttressed with cement. Originally designed with a two-room plan, the interior has now been combined into one room. The cottage is two storeys tall, while the outhouse and the 20th-century addition are single storey and two windows wide. All windows have late 20th-century wood casements, with the right-hand second storey window being a later insertion. The ground storey features an off-centre doorway with a late 20th-century glazed door, a three-light window to the left, and a single light window to the right, all with plain granite lintels. The doorway is sheltered by a thatched hood supported by wooden posts. The interior has been completely rebuilt, except for the ground storey fireplace, which retains a plain granite lintel. The architect has stated that the roof was rebuilt while maintaining its original shape. In the 1680s, there were five cottages on this site, one of which was demolished to accommodate the 20th-century extension of the surviving cottage. Bagtor Mill Cottage is part of a visually significant group with Bagtor Mill and its outbuilding, which are located about 50 metres to the west.
