Description
Three adjacent headstones, dated 1748, 1753, and 1758, are located approximately 1 metre south of the south aisle of the Church of St Mary in Belstone. These headstones commemorate members of the Underhill family and are made of granite, standing about 600mm high and facing west. Each headstone features inscriptions in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The rightmost headstone has a segmental head and is dedicated to the unnamed daughter of Richard and Charity Underhill, who died in 1748. The middle headstone is round-headed and topped with a winged cherub's head, commemorating Charity Underhill's death in 1753. The left headstone is also segmental-headed and features a winged cherub's head, recording the death of Richard, son of Richard Underhill, likely Charity's husband.
