Description
The Powder Mills Clapper Bridge is a clapper bridge located over Cherry Brook in Lydford, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from rough granite blocks for the piers and jambs, with granite slab lintels. The bridge features two spans. Drill-holes in several stones indicate that it was built after the early 19th century, when this method of splitting granite became common, and it may date from around 1844, coinciding with the construction of the nearby powder mills. While this type of bridge construction was likely first used in early medieval times, later examples like this one can also be found.
