Description

Farmhouse. Dating to the mid-17th century, it was altered in the 18th century when a passage was separated from the main house, and a rear kitchen outshut was added in the 19th century. Further alterations occurred in the 20th century, including the replacement of windows. The farmhouse is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble, with the upper portion rendered and lined. It has a slate roof with a gable end stack to the right and a ridge stack heating the original hall, and another gable end stack to the rear wing on the right.

Originally designed with a through-passage plan open to a shippon (animal shelter) on the left, and a hall/kitchen to the right, the building may have initially lacked an inner room. A room in the upper end was likely added in the late 17th century, its front wall stepped back slightly. The hall has an axial stack backing onto the passage, while the inner room is heated by a gable end stack. During the 18th century, a kitchen outshut was built with access from the rear of the hall, and the passage entrance was closed with the addition of a porch to the front left of the hall.

The rear wing, also likely dating to the mid-17th century, may incorporate an earlier stair tower with access from the rear of the hall. It originally had a single-room plan and served as a cider store, unheated on the ground floor and with a gable end stack heating the first-floor room, a space now partitioned. The shippon has been raised in height.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The shippon and passage are on the left, while the hall and inner room are on the right. The shippon has a front passage door with external steps leading to a loft door above, and two 20th-century casement windows at ground floor level. The upper end has three 2-light casements at first floor level. A porch with a pitched roof and half-glazed door is positioned to the left, accompanied by two 20th-century windows to the right. The wall steps back slightly from the hall wall to the inner room. The left gable end of the shippon has a central door, a granite ventilation slit above with a timber member spanning it, likely placed when the roof was raised. The roof is hipped. At the rear, a two-storey rear wing is located behind the main wall, featuring a ground and first-floor 2-light casement to the outer side and a gable end stack. A single-storey kitchen outshut has a stack to the side. A door remains in the rear of the shippon in the position of the original passage.

Inside, the inner door of the porch is 2-panelled with strap hinges. The hall fireplace has a flat chamfered granite lintel with granite jambs, and a slate floor. A door to the rear wing has a frame cut back to allow for passage of barrels. In the rear wing, a dog-leg staircase replaces an earlier stair, with two blocked stair lights and recesses visible from the inside. There is no evidence of a fireplace at ground floor level, now partitioned to form a stair hall and end room. Two steps lead up from the hall to the inner room, which has 19th-century vertical boarding as dado panelling. In the original passage, a doorway to the hall is blocked on the right; the passage likely originally opened to the shippon.
