Description

This building is a bank barn and attached stable, located about 30 meters southeast of Sortridge Manor. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a later lower addition and 20th-century alterations. The structure is made of mixed slatestone and granite random rubble, featuring granite quoins. The upper barn roof is covered in asbestos slate, while the lower roof is in slate, with a corrugated iron gable end above the lower addition.

The barn has a central threshing floor doorway at a higher ground level at the front, leading to an open-fronted cattle shed at the rear. To the left end, there is a later addition that is likely a stable with a loft above. The southeast elevation includes a tall cart entry with a timber lintel and a corrugated iron hood set at an upper level, accessed by four granite steps and a platform. There is an upper opening to the right under the eaves with a 6-pane light inserted, a rooflight to the left, and a lower ground-level opening with a granite lintel. A rough joint to the left indicates the lower level addition, which has an opening under the eaves and a ground-level opening.

The right return features a blank gable end, while the left return has a door opening with a timber lintel to the left and an upper-level loading door with a timber lintel to the right. The rear is open-fronted at the lower level for animal shelter, consisting of four bays with square rubble piers, including large granite blocks. Very large paired timber lintels span between the bays, and original floor joists show mortices from a former upper flooring. The upper level loading door has a timber lintel corresponding to the front opening, with two ventilation slits to the right and one to the left. There is a straight joint to the right leading to the lower level addition, which has a small opening at ground floor with a slate lintel.

Inside, the upper level barn has a 20th-century roof with five bays, crossed principals, and one row of purlins. The lower level features a three-bay roof with crossed principals, two rows of purlins, and side-pegged collars. There is a keeping hole to the side of the rear upper left door with a slate lintel. The building was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey in July 1985.
