Description
The rounded ventilation shaft located about 140 metres south of Canonteign Barton is a Grade II listed structure from the late 19th century. It is made of stone rubble and features a rounded, tapering design. At the time of the survey in 1987, the shaft was completely covered in ivy. This shaft is one of two ventilation shafts associated with the Wheal Exmouth lead and barytes mine, which operated from the 1850s to the 1880s and employed 70 underground workers in 1863. The shaft is part of an impressive roadside group that includes a more ornamental octagonal shaft and an adjacent engine house.
