Description

No. 1 Cole's Cottage and Weirside is a house that has been divided into two homes. It has origins dating back to the mid-16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble and rendered, with No. 1 Cole's Cottage featuring a slate roof and Weirside having a concrete tile roof. There is a rubble ridge stack to the left of the passage and a right gable end with caps.

No. 1 Cole's Cottage is on the left, while Weirside is on the right. The layout suggests a possible three-room and through passage plan, although the inner room has been demolished and replaced by an adjacent building. The hall is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage, with a newel stair located at the rear of the hall. The building has two storeys, with No. 1 Cole's Cottage displaying two 20th-century pivoted windows, including a cambered head window at the ground floor left and a 20th-century gabled porch to the right. Weirside has a lower roof line and features a four-centred arched hollow chamfered granite door opening with a plank and batten door. There is a similar arched opening to the right, likely reset, with a 19th-century 12-pane sash window inserted. A 16-pane sash window is found in an exposed box at both the ground and first floors on the right, along with a small single light under the eaves to the left and a 20th-century roof light.

The right return of Weirside is made of random rubble and painted, with a 1½ storey rear section that includes a similar sash window. The rear has a door leading to the passage with a timber lintel, a 20th-century half-glazed door, and a blocked window opening above, which is partially covered by a rear addition that has a door on the inner side. No. 1 Cole's Cottage has a small single-storey 20th-century addition at the rear, featuring a door and a multi-pane light.

Inside No. 1 Cole's Cottage, there is a fireplace that backs onto the passage, with a large chamfered granite lintel resting on 20th-century rubble jambs. The room contains two cross beams that extend over a 20th-century partition, both of which are chamfered and stopped. A timber lintel remains from a former door to the passage, and the rear wall has a keeping hole and a deep splayed reveal to the front window. The rear left area has a granite newel stair. The interior of Weirside is not accessible and has a lower floor level than No. 1 Cole's Cottage.
