Description
This lantern, located on the churchyard wall of the Church of St John, dates from the late 19th century. It is made of wrought iron and glass, set on a granite plinth. The plinth features the inscription "Lighten our darkness we beseech thee O Lord," along with the initials J.N.G. and E.G., likely representing James Nutcombe Gould (1849-1899) and Edith Gould (1859-1900), who are buried nearby. The lantern itself has an elaborate Gothic-style iron frame topped with a cross. It is 10-sided, with a shaped top, and eight of the sides are glazed, featuring centerpieces made of bulls-eyes of crown-glass sheets. Originally, the lantern held an oil lamp, but it is now illuminated by electricity.
