Description

Beckaford Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th century. The building features granite rubble walls, which are rendered at the rear and sides, and has rendered chimney stacks. The roof is slate and gabled at both ends. The layout consists of three rooms with either a through or cross-passage plan, and an axial stack to the hall that backs onto the passage. There are gable end stacks at either end of the house. The 19th-century renovations included raising the eaves, although the original layout was maintained. The room at the lower end was converted into a store, and external stairs at the rear have since been removed.

The farmhouse is two stories high and has a regular four-window front on the southeast side, featuring late 20th-century two-light casements. The passage doorway is located to the right of the center and is accompanied by a large 20th-century stone porch and a glazed door. There is a similar door to the right leading into the lower room. Inside, the only original feature visible is the hall fireplace, which has a slightly cambered ovolo-moulded wooden lintel with run-out stops and monolithic granite jambs that are chamfered with ball stops. A pegged roof from the late 18th to early 19th century still exists. Although much of the original 17th-century structure is not visible due to alterations, the original plan remains intact, and the surviving fireplace is of notably high quality. It is possible that additional original features are hidden from view.
