Description

Freelands Cottage is located north of the cottages on the north-east side of the road in Manaton. This cottage, likely built in the mid-17th century, has 20th-century extensions. It features rendered granite rubble walls and chimney stacks that may include some cob. The roof is thatched with gable ends, while a single-storey section has a wooden shingle roof. The original layout is somewhat obscured by later changes, but it may have been a single-cell house or a two-room design with an unheated higher end, which has since been reduced to one storey. The original entrance location is also unclear. There is a gable end stack at the lower end of the hall/kitchen, accompanied by a newel staircase on one side. A 20th-century addition is present at the front of the higher end, along with a large 20th-century extension linked to the corner of the lower end. The cottage has two storeys and a two-window front, featuring small 20th-century two-light casements with leaded panes and plate glass on the ground floor right. A projecting chimney stack is located at the right gable end.

Inside, the main room includes an open fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has scroll stops and granite jambs, with the right-hand jamb being monolithic. To the left of the fireplace is a brick oven, and adjacent to it is a stone newel staircase. There is one cross beam that is chamfered with scroll stops. At the upper end of the hall, there is a solid stone wall. The roof is constructed with straight principal rafters and lapped and pegged collars. Despite significant alterations, this cottage remains a recognizable and relatively unusual example of a small 17th-century house in the area.
