Description
The Manaton War Memorial is a granite structure dating from the aftermath of the First World War, situated within the churchyard of the Grade I-listed Church of St Winifred. It is located to the south-east of the church, near the Grade II-listed lychgate and various other Grade II-listed monuments within the churchyard. The memorial is a simple cross rising from a tall, square shaft, which in turn stands on a stepped pedestal, raised on a square base. A dedicatory inscription encircles the upper part of the pedestal. The inscription on the east face reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF MANATON WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919.” The names of those commemorated from the First World War, including one who died in 1925, are listed on the east face of the pedestal. Second World War names, with the dates 1939–1945, are listed on the south face. The west face bears the inscription "GREATER LOVE / HATH NO MAN / THAN THIS THAT / A MAN LAY DOWN / HIS LIFE FOR HIS / FRIENDS.”
