Description
The Old Clapper Bridge, located about 150 metres north-east of Lower Cator Farmhouse, is a disused clapper bridge over the West Webburn river. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and is constructed of granite. The bridge features a large, worn slab of stone, known as a clapper-stone, which measures approximately 3 metres long and 1 metre wide, with a slight camber in the centre. In the middle of the bridge, there is a series of small shallow holes that may have been used for a later boundary fence. The bridge is supported at either end by large, roughly-squared trestle-stones. Approximately 15 metres to the north-west, there is a later clapper bridge that carries the existing road to Lower Cator Farmhouse, which is also listed.
