Description
The farm buildings and stables form three sides of a yard located about 40 metres northwest of Canonteign Barton. The farm buildings, which include the north range and part of the west range, date back to the 17th century. The stables, making up the remainder of the west range and the south range, are likely from the early 19th century. The farm buildings are constructed from cob and stone rubble, mostly topped with corrugated iron roofs, although one lean-to retains a slate roof. The stables are made of stone rubble with granite and brick dressings and also have a corrugated iron roof.
The north range features an irregular layout, with a lofted barn at the eastern end and a large threshing barn to the left. This area includes a horse engine house, a deep porch, and a lean-to at the front. The barn has a notable 17th-century chamfered doorframe on the right, a smaller doorway on the left flanked by windows, and a loft loading door. The threshing barn has large double doors leading to the deep lean-to porch, double doors to the horse engine house on the left, and a lean-to that is open on the right side. The north end of the west range, adjacent to the threshing barn, features a largely cob cartshed with double doors at the front. The rest of the west range has four wide doorways on the right, which are topped with segmental brick relieving arches and metal lintels. There are also two loft loading doors, four smaller doorways with timber doors on the left, five windows, two loft openings, and pigeon holes. The south range contains three doorways with timber doors and segmental brick arches, along with two loft loading doors and pigeon holes at the left end.
The interiors were not inspected, but the roof construction of the north range may be of interest. This impressive set of buildings holds group value with Canonteign Barton.
