Description

The pyramid in the grounds of Stanway House, located about 300 meters to the east, is an ornamental garden building built in 1750 for Robert Tracy, as indicated by the datestone. It features ashlar masonry and has a square shape. The side facing the house has a moulded plinth and rusticated quoins at the corners. There is a central opening with a semi-circular head, a balustrade at the bottom, and widely spaced iron glazing bars. The rusticated quoins frame the jambs and extend into a rusticated panel above, which is the same width and frames a plaque. The building has a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and gadrooned urn finials at the corners. At the top, there is a steep square stone pyramid with a swept foot.

Inside, the room has been reduced to an octagon shape with four semi-circular recesses, each featuring a shell at the head. There are openings on all four main sides, with balustrades only across the east and west sides. Above the level of the removed ceiling, double fins in the corners support a circular cone, with a rubble stone lower part and brick above. This structure was built as a memorial to John Tracy, as noted by the Latin inscription on the plaque, and it was originally situated at the top of a cascade, which was removed in the mid-19th century. The pyramid forms a group with Stanway House.
