Description

The stable block at Stanway House, built between 1859 and 1860 by W. Burn for the Earl of Wemyss, is a Grade II listed structure. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a stone slate roof. The building is arranged in a 'U' plan, forming a courtyard that measures five by three. It stands one and a half storeys tall and has an added rear wing.

The front of the stable block has gables on either side, a plinth, and a three-light mullion and transom window, with a two-light mullion window above. The gables have parapets and a cross-gablet apex. The yard wall slightly projects from each gable and has a two-course ridged top, with steps leading up to the central gateway. The wall is thickened, featuring pilasters on a high base on either side, with moulded capitals and a moulded edge to the gateway. The gateway has a four-centred arch with a projecting keystone and a pediment above.

Inside the courtyard, the end wall has three double boarded doors with cover strips and segmental heads, along with smaller double boarded doors on each side that have rectangular lights above and flat stone lintels. Above these doors, there is a two-light mullion and transom window that rises into a gabled dormer with a parapet gable. The large-doored section at either end has ridge chimneys with moulded caps. Each wing has lower roofs, with a double boarded door at the centre of each wing and rectangular lights above. There are leaded-light windows on each side with flat stone lintels, and above the boarded doors, there are stone dormers with parapet gables and two small gabled louvred dormers above.

The yard is paved with bricks and features a mounting block with three stone steps on the right. Inside, the right wing contains five stalls with boarded partitions that have swept tops, a boarded chute in the corner, a plastered ceiling, and a moulded cornice. The rear left section has two loose boxes with corner troughs and cast-iron racks above, along with a plastered ceiling.
