Description
The garden wall to the south of Stanway House is a structure likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is made of ashlar and extends approximately 43 meters from the gatehouse along the side of the road, then turns at an angle to run about 40 meters along the lane to the Estate Yard. The section by the road is about 4 meters high and features a vertical joint to the gatehouse, with a plinth and a capping made of three courses that slopes outwards towards the road, overhanging at the base.
There are three paired oval openings with moulded surrounds and keys. At the corner, the wall reduces in height to about 2 meters and has a flat top, with a blocked doorway near the far end that has a flat stone lintel. On the garden side, the ground is much higher, and there are oval openings at the back of rectangular recesses, which have moulded, eared surrounds. Between these openings are five small recesses with ogee heads. There is also a stub of a demolished wall extending at right angles to the first section at the corner, and the lower wall is slightly thickened at the far end. The walls are depicted in a Kyp engraving from 1712.
