Description

The Gatehouse at Stanway House, built around 1630, is possibly designed by Timothy Strong of Barrington for Sir Richard Tracy. It underwent minor alterations around 1700. The structure features ashlar walls and a stone slate roof, and stands three stories tall.

Facing the road, the gatehouse has a carriage archway with double doors that rise through two floors. The archway is framed with moulded detailing, featuring tall panels and strapwork carving above. It has a 4-centred arch with a moulded surround, capitals, a scroll keystone, and plain spandrels. Flanking the archway are fluted Roman Doric columns on high bases adorned with strapwork decoration, with pilasters that match the arch outside the columns.

Above the archway, there is a frieze alternating between roses and diamonds set between triglyphs, topped with a broken segmental pediment that has shell finials at its base. The pediment frames an eared rectangular panel displaying a coat of arms, which was added around 1700, with a triangular pediment above it.

On either side of the archway, there are canted bays that rise through three floors, each featuring a three-light, ovolo-moulded mullion window with a hoodmould that extends as a string course. The bays are topped with an openwork parapet and a lead chute. Above, three shaped gables with shell finials are repeated at an angle on the building's corners. The gable chimneys are of a 'T' plan with moulded caps.

Inside, the gatehouse contains two spiral stairways that turn in opposite directions and stone fireplaces with 4-centred arches. The gatehouse forms a group with the House, courtyard, garden walls, and the church.
