Description
Tudor Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid-16th century. It features a timber-frame construction with tension bracing, a stone base, brick elements, and a tiled roof with a brick chimney. The house has a wide front that juts out into Lilley's Alley and is situated behind The Berkeley Arms on Church Street.
The two-storey front has brick-filled braced framing, with plaster infill on the first floor, all resting on a stone plinth. There is a recess on the left side, which may have been a former basement access. The first floor has a small two-light casement window above three two-light casement windows on the ground floor, and a 20th-century door is located towards the left. The framing includes a large plate on the plinth along most of its length and three jetty brackets.
On the left side, there is a brick ridge stack. The northern gable features square panel framing, with the corner post leaning back from the front wall and a small plain window. The southern gable shows remnants of framing with brick infill, and there is a French door leading to a terrace at first-floor level. To the right, there is a lower wing that connects with the adjacent property, Claypipes. The interior has not been inspected.
