Description

This detached house, originally two properties known as Bicknor and Bicknor Cottage, stands on a rear plot adjacent to number 6 Church Street. The house has 17th-century origins, but was substantially restored in the late 20th century. The exterior is rough rendering on brick and has a concrete pantile roof with a brick stack. It is a two-room block set across the site, with a gable facing a rear alleyway. The heated room is at the south end of the building, next to the Berkeley Arms. The main front, facing away from Church Street, is a single storey with an attic, and has two windows. The attic space is lit by 20th-century flat-roofed dormers. The windows are 20th-century, two-light, small-pane casements, either side of a long, gabled porch with a 20th-century door. The left gable features a large, external, square brick stack which has been cropped at the top. The other gable is plain. The rear elevation, which forms the front of number 5A, has a swept-down roof over a 20th-century door and windows. The interior was not inspected, but retains one large central chamfered beam with exposed joists in the ground-floor heated room. The fireplace is a replacement. The property is notable for being built across the site, embracing the width of two street frontages – numbers 6 and 7.
