Description

This is a house and shop dating back to the 16th century, with alterations in the 18th century. The front of the building was later updated. The front is rendered and faced with ashlar stone, likely resting on timber framing to the upper floor, with some cut stone at ground floor, and timber framing at the rear. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in stone slates, with a brick stack on the left side. The upper floor has two sash windows with glazing bars and a 20th-century casement, all set within a flat band surround. The ground floor features a 19th-century double-fronted, canted bay shopfront, with a pair of part-glazed doors in the centre and, to the far right, a good pair of 18th-century six-panel fielded and moulded doors set in a flat surround, highlighted by a prominent fluted keystone. At the left end is a projecting wall with a classical feature, including a moulded corner pilaster, capital, moulded cornice, and a small vertical opening. This appears to have been part of an 18th-century design that linked to the doors at the opposite end.

The property extends back a considerable distance. The rear of the main block, facing the street, displays gable end heavy box timber framing, a door leading to a throughway, and then a long wing and return block that contains a small courtyard facing the side of No. 12. The return wing is in braced timber framing and likely was originally jettied. The interior has not been inspected.
