Description

Dumbleton Mill, located approximately 60 meters east of Mill Farm, is an undershot mill dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick set on a dressed limestone plinth, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The building has a rectangular plan with an extension at the east gable end, through which the mill stream runs.

The north front features two windows and two gablets. On the lower left, there is a three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, with two matching three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements on the first and second floors. Each gablet has single-light casements with double-chamfered surrounds. A double plank doorway is set within a flat-chamfered dressed limestone surround with alternate jambs.

Stone steps on a brick base at the right gable end provide access to the first floor via a plank door with a dressed stone surround featuring side alternate jambs. The attic contains a two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, and above it, there is a triangular arrangement of pigeon holes and landings. The opposite gable end has two two-light stone-mullioned casements and another triangular arrangement of pigeon holes. All windows include horizontal glazing bars, with a hopper at the center of the rear elevation.

To the left gable end, there is a single-storey wheel house with double plank doors. Inside the mill, there is a 2.5-meter-wide undershot cast iron mill wheel, along with wooden gear wheels and chutes. Two grindstones and grain bins are still in place in the attic. The wheel house has a hipped roof, which is currently in a state of collapse, and most windows in the mill building were broken at the time of the last survey in March 1987.
