Description
Sparrow's Row is a building with a complex history, originally built in the 17th century and extended in the 18th century, with 20th-century modifications. It was formerly The Three Pigeons Inn and later divided into four cottages, now forming two dwellings.
The original 17th-century section is characterized by square-panelled timber framing with struts, covered by a thatched roof with scallop decoration along the ridge. This section has a rectangular plan and houses an attic lit by two eyebrow dormers. Most of the windows are 20th-century, 2 or 3-light casements. There are three 20th-century glazed porches at the front and lean-to kitchen extensions at the rear which are not considered to be of special interest. The front features stable-type doors within glazed porches, and a double plate glass door is located on the far left.
The 18th-century extension is constructed of brick, painted to resemble timber framing. It features 2-light casement windows with flat-arched brick heads above the ground floor openings, and dentil decoration along the eaves. The main body of the building has a central, double axial stack, while the right gable end has a projecting stack.
Inside the original 17th-century section, there are flat-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and carpenter’s marks are visible on the timber framing, including additional identifying marks. A central ground floor room was once reputed to contain wall paintings resembling playing cards, though these are now covered up.
