Description

Woodbine Cottage is probably originally two semi-detached cottages, now used as a single dwelling. The building dates from the 17th century, with later 20th-century additions. It has a timber frame with painted brick infill between the framing, and a stone plinth. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks. The plan is rectangular, with a single bay 20th-century extension to the right gable end. The main body of the cottage has one storey and an attic, with a gabled 20th-century dormer window with weather-boarded surround, and a flat-roofed 4-light dormer to the right. There are 2-light and 4-light 20th-century wood casement windows. A 19th-century plank door is located towards the left-hand end, with a single-pitched plank hood above it, and another 20th-century plank door towards the right end. A projecting gable-end stack is on the left, and there is an axial stack. Inside, there is an open fire with a wood bressumer. A central first-floor room has two moulded plasterwork panels; one depicts a beast with a horse-like head and a lion-like hindquarters; the other, over a fireplace, features a latticework pattern framing mouldings of a hawk (centre), fleur-de-lys (right), and a hawk hovering over a hound (left), possibly of heraldic origin. A moulding of a deer with an arrow through its neck is on the left, along with two hounds on the centre and right within the lattice detail at the bottom.
