Description
Snowshill House is a large farmhouse built in the early 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th or early 20th century. The south garden facade features well-crafted, squared stone that approaches ashlar quality, while the rest of the building is constructed from smaller, coursed, squared stone with larger quoins. The roof is made of stone slate.
The original structure is square and three windows wide, with a projecting central 'porch' on the garden side and stands at 2 1/2 storeys. To the left, there is a 1 1/2 storey, single room extension, and a lean-to on part of the right return, both of which extend the garden elevation.
On the garden front, there is a plinth at the original centre, featuring a 4-light mullion and transom window in the projection, complete with a king mullion. There are single light transomed windows in the returns, and on either side, a 3-light mullioned window, with the right one positioned above a 2-light window leading to the cellar. The left extension includes a lean-to with a sill wall and wooden Tuscan columns supporting the wallplate, along with a gable wall at the left end; behind this is a metal French door set under a stone lintel.
A plain string course runs above the main block, stopping short of the corners. In the centre projection, there is a three-light mullioned window, flanked by single lights in the returns. The left extension features a 2-light mullioned window that rises into a parapet gable with a roll at the apex, similar to the parapet gable at the left end. On the right, there is a lancet window with sunk spandrels above the lean-to.
Above, a plain string course extends to the verge of the lean-to on the right but stops short of the main block's corner on the left. An oval window is positioned in the centre projection, adorned with alternate projecting dummy voussoirs, topped by a parapet gable. Each larger gable on the main block has a 2-light mullioned window with a plain string course above, leading to a parapet gable with a roll at the apex.
The parallel side roofs are linked by a cross roof near the front, with chimneys located behind this. A double chimney rises from the front eaves on the left, featuring two square flues with a moulded cap. The parapet gable extends down the lean-to on the right. The interior has not been inspected. There is a single-storey link to the right leading to a further 2 1/2 storey block, which is not of special interest.
