Description
The gateway to the kitchen garden, located about 22 meters east of the northeast corner of Stanway House and flanked by approximately 2 meters of adjoining wall on each side, dates from around 1860 and is likely designed by W. Burn. It features a combination of ashlar and rubble masonry. The gateway is set within a garden wall and includes a boarded door framed by a 4-centred arch, which has a double-ovolo moulding along the edges and low-relief carving in the spandrels. The door is flanked by plain Roman Doric pilasters that are slightly set back, with a plain frieze and a pediment that includes a shell and low-relief carving. On either side of the gateway, there are short sections of ashlar wall with plain coping, which is slightly lower than the pediment. Beyond these walls, there is a slightly thinner rubble wall that slopes downwards, leading to a lower level. This gateway forms a group with Stanway House and the Pyramid.
