Description
The Northway is a former private house, now a public house, dated 1851 and bearing the initials 'W.W.' (William Woodward) on a limestone shield on the right gable end. The building is constructed of blue lias stone with ashlar quoins, and has a fishscale ceramic tile roof with blue lias stacks also featuring ashlar quoins. It has a rectangular plan with extensions to the right of the main entrance front.
The main facade is symmetrical, with three windows. A gabled projecting bay dominates the centre and contains a round-headed entrance with a keystone; the entrance has a part-glazed double door within a porch. Above the entrance is a canted oriel window. Flanking bays have two-light round-headed sash windows set within limestone surrounds, each with a hoodmould supported by console details. The left return features two-bay windows to the ground floor with a pierced parapet. A two-bay extension to the right of the entrance front has three-light stone-mullioned casement windows with glazing bars. Axial and gable end stacks are present.
An adjoining wall, also constructed of blue lias with brick piers, runs alongside the right gable end of the extension. The wall’s height gradually reduces from approximately 4.5 metres to 2 metres to the right, achieved through a series of concave sweeps. Moulded cappings and ball finials adorn the wall piers. The interior has not been inspected.
