Description

The Bothy is a detached house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The rear of the building shows some square-panelled timber framing with brick infill, while the main walls are now encased in brick, constructed in several phases. The house has stone and brick stacks, and a flattened ā€˜U’ shape plan typical of the 18th century. It is two storeys high and has an attic. The front of the house has five windows; these are two and three-light casements with transoms, set within segmental-headed surrounds. The ground floor windows are modern top-opening casements within the same surrounds. A modern panelled door is located off-centre to the left, with a canopy above. An earlier studded plank door is situated off-centre to the right. A single roof dormer with glazing bars illuminates the attic. There are brick dentils to the eaves. Inside, the ceiling features beams arranged in a Y-shape, with some beams set diagonally, which may indicate the building once had jettied upper floors. The interior also includes an open fireplace with a bressumer, a mid- to late 18th century staircase with turned balusters, and a large projecting stack at the rear. Two further projecting stacks are visible from the left-hand return.
