Description
This is an unidentified chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, approximately 6 metres south of the chancel. It commemorates John, with the only surviving date being 1705. The tomb is made of limestone and slatestone. The slatestone inscription panel on the north side is now badly eroded and features moulded marginal panels that reflect the shape of the lyre-shaped ends. The left-hand panel is decorated with a skull and ribbon tie, while the right-hand panel displays a cherub with downfolded wings. There is a single detached piece of the inscription panel on the south side, which is now separated from the monument; its marginal panels match those on the north side, with one now lying flat. The west end showcases fine incised foliate scrollwork and a cherub's head, while the east end has been lost. The tomb is topped with a thick capping that has a moulded margin.
