Description
The Richard and Hester Clayton monuments are a pair of headstones located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, approximately 1.5 meters south of the tower. They are believed to be crafted by Samuel Hobbs and are made of slate stone. Each headstone stands about 2 meters tall and features a curved top.
The right-hand headstone commemorates Richard Clayton, who died in 1797. It includes a representation of the Crucifixion at the top, flanked by angels holding a crown, and is surrounded by a highly ornate floral design around the inscription. The left-hand headstone is dedicated to Hester, the wife of Richard Clayton, who died in 1792. It features an oval design with two angels crowning a virgin at the top, also surrounded by a richly detailed floral relief around the inscription.
These headstones are notable for their size and the quality of their craftsmanship, making them exceptional examples from their period.
