Richard and Hester Clayton monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, c1.5m south of the tower

Pair of headstones reputed to be by Samuel Hobbs. Slate stone. Each headstone is c2m in height with a curved head. a) Right-hand headstone to Richard Clayton, died 1797 with representation of the Crucifixion at the top and angels holding a crown at the top. Highly ornate floral surround all around the inscription. b) Head immediately to the left to Hester, wife of Richard Clayton, died 1792. Oval containing two angels crowning virgin at top. Highly ornate floral surround in relief all around the inscription. These headstones are unusually large and finely executed examples of their period.
