Description

The Byrne monument is a chest tomb located approximately 2 metres north of the nave central buttress in Tewkesbury Abbey Churchyard. It is believed to commemorate Thomas Byrne, who died in 1690. The tomb is made of limestone and features a thick ledger slab with cyma-moulded edges. The long sides have recessed centre panels adorned with cartouches, and the ends are shaped like lyres with oval panels. It has a moulded base and rests on a platform of flat headstones. The design reflects characteristics typical of the early 18th century in this area, although the earliest date found on the monument is from 1690.
