Description
The monument to Lord Ellenborough's aides, dating from the mid-19th century, is located approximately 35 meters south-west of the Ellenborough Park Hotel in Southam. It is constructed of limestone and features an artificial stone slate roof. The structure has a square open-sided plan with a basement room and is set on a stepped plinth on two sides. The east side has five semi-circular steps, while the west side has steps leading down to a plank door that accesses the basement.
The monument includes a parapet with star-shaped openings, which was in a state of collapse during the last survey in May 1987. Each of the four sides features paired cusped arches with central pendants. At the center is an octagonal memorial that matches a marble font found in the Church of the Ascension in Southam. This memorial is adorned with lotus flower decorations and running floral motifs.
The inscriptions on the monument are partially eroded and commemorate various colleagues and campaigns, including references to 'NAPIER GOVERNOR OF SCINDE. MEEANEE. HYDERABAD'. There is also an inscription on the upper surface that reads, 'TO THE HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN / -----UNDER HIS GOVERNMENT / RESTORED VICTORY TO OUR ARMS IN INDIA / ------ DICTATED PEACE TO C-----NA / ---- -- WALES OF NAN-N / -----RECORDING THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS / DICTATED WITH GRATEFUL AFFECTION / TOWARD LORD ELLENBOROUGH'.
Above the arches, there are lists of names facing inwards, along with the inscription, 'THE NAMES UPON THESE WALLS / ARE THOSE OF OFFICERS MILITARY AND CIVIL / TO WHOSE ASSISTANCE LORD ELLENBOROUGH / WAS MORE ESPECIALLY INDEBITED / FOR THE SUCCESS OF HIS ADMINISTRATION / IN INDIA'. The monument and its inscriptions were noted to be in poor condition during the last survey in May 1987.
