Description
The Southam and Cleeve Hill War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by the architects Healing and Overbury from Cheltenham. It was built in 1920, with alterations made after the Second World War.
Constructed from local limestone, the memorial features a plain wheel-headed cross atop a tapering square shaft. This shaft rises from a square plinth, which is set on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The dedication is inscribed on the plinth, with the front face reading: "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF SOUTHAM AND CLEEVE HILL WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)." Two additional faces are also inscribed; one reads: "IS IT/ NOTHING TO YOU/ ALL YE THAT/ PASS BY," and the other states: "GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE FOR/ HIS FRIENDS."
