Description

Newport House is a detached house dating from the mid-18th century. It was unoccupied and undergoing conversion into flats at the time of a survey in November 1984. The house is constructed with roughcast over rubble stone, with rendered alternating chamfered quoins, and has a tile and Roman tile roof with brick stacks. It is arranged in a staggered double range, with three storeys and a single-storey bay on the front to the right.

The front has four windows; 12-pane sashes to the first floor, 9-pane to the second floor, and 20-pane to the ground floor, all with moulded stone architraves, triple keystones, and sill brackets. A two-storey porch is centrally located to the right, featuring a large 20-pane sash window on the first floor and a projecting canted porch with two Doric columns leading to a wide entrance. The entrance door is made of plank with vertical applied moulded strips and an oval central window. A single-storey bay to the right has a triple sash window in a matching style, with a cornice and blocking course. The rear range is staggered directly behind the front range and has a moulded cornice; the front range has a plain coped parapet. The interior was not inspected, but ground floor internal shutters remain in the main range.
