Description

The Field is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 17th century, with an early to mid-18th century front. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a modern pitched roof. The building has two storeys and is adorned with a modillion eaves cornice and a parapet. It includes five ranges of double-hung sash windows that have glazing bars, moulded architraves, and keystones. The entrance door is topped with a fanlight and framed by a moulded stone architrave. A 19th-century porch with two Ionic columns, a dentilled cornice, and a pediment enhances the entrance. On either side of the porch are 19th-century oblong bays that have replaced the original ground floor windows. The building also features three modern attic dormers, which have replaced earlier ones that had alternate triangular and segmental pediments. At the rear, there are mullioned windows with hoodmoulds.

Inside, the staircase is contemporary and features panelling up to dado height, with the dado ramped to principal muntins that are fluted Corinthian pilasters. The turned balusters and columnar newels add to the staircase's elegance. The main ground floor room is wainscotted throughout and has a modillioned and dentilled cornice. The chimneypiece includes an overmantel with a shouldered architrave and intricately carved acanthus scrolls, flanked by giant fluted Corinthian pilasters that support a full entablature. One of the first-floor rooms is also wainscotted throughout and features a fireplace with a fluted keystone and an overmantel, along with fluted Roman Doric pilasters and a full entablature that includes triglyphs and guttae. The back room on the ground floor has two ogee-headed recesses that were formerly windows.

The Field is part of a group with Huckvales and No 6 Bowbridge Lane.
