Description

The War Memorial in Selsley, designed by Thomas Falconer FRIBA, dates from around 1919-20 and is made of local oolitic limestone. The memorial takes the form of a wheel cross, standing approximately 5 meters high, with a small gabled canopy at the top. The wheel encircles the head of a sturdy cross, which has a rectangular shaft that tapers and ends in a chamfered base.

On each sloping side of the base, there is a bronze plaque. The plaque on the north side honors the memory of the men from Selsley who lost their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1919, stating, "THERE BE OF THEM THAT HAVE LEFT A NAME BEHIND THEM." The plaques on the east and west sides list the ranks, names, decorations, and regiments or services of the 21 fallen soldiers. The plaque on the south face provides the dates of the Second World War and names five men, along with their ranks and regiments or services, concluding with "R.I.P."

The base of the memorial is set on a platform of three steps, surrounded by paving. The area is enclosed by cast-iron railings forming a rectangular boundary, with a gate on the south side.
