Description

The gateway to the south of Stanley Park is a mid-19th century structure, possibly designed by Joseph Franklin for S.S. Marling. It features limestone ashlar, dressed, squared, and coursed dry limestone walling, along with timber gates that have iron fittings. The main arch has a large, four-centred moulded opening, with shield-enriched spandrels and the inscription "S.S.M." at the center. The sides are buttressed, and the top has hipped weathered coping with ballflower enrichment below. To the left is a lower pedestrian gateway with a shouldered arch and a small rectangular opening above that contains an iron-framed gas lamp. The main plank gates have a swept top with spiked iron fittings, and there is a matching pedestrian gate. The flanking walls are curving dry stone with a coped top, ending in ashlar piers. The main archway displays 20th-century iron lettering that reads "Stanley Park." This gateway is part of a group with No. 23, Stanley Park Lodge, and others.
