Description
Woodside Cottage is a small house dating from the late 17th century, with an extension added in the late 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble and features a stone tile roof with gabled ends. The gable-end stacks have ashlar shafts with cornices.
The building has a single-cell plan with a small unheated integral outshut at the rear. The main room is heated by a fireplace located in the south gable end, which includes an oven and winder stairs leading to an attic chamber. In the late 19th century, a one-room plan cross-wing was added to the north end, and a porch was constructed in the front angle in the 20th century.
The exterior consists of a one-storey and attic main range, featuring a three-light casement window on the right and a gabled dormer with a two-light casement and leaded panes on the left. The left side also includes a 20th-century rendered porch in the angle with the projecting gabled late 19th-century cross-wing, which has two and three-light stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds. At the rear, there is a gable on the right with a similar stone mullion window and an outshut below, along with a small original outshut in the angle and a gabled dormer to the left.
Inside, the original house retains chamfered cross-beams, exposed joists, and a fireplace with dressed stone jambs, a chamfered timber bressummer, and a stone oven. The winder stairs beside the stack lead to the attic chamber, which has a later partition closing off the collar truss with side purlins. The 19th-century cross-wing features cast-iron chimneypieces, a dresser, and window catches.
