Description
Clapsgate is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof that is hipped at the cross wing on the right, and features brick stacks. The building has an L-shaped layout and is two stories tall. The main section includes three windows, while the cross wing has two, all of which are 12-pane sashes with splayed brick voussoirs. The first floor features 16-pane wood mullion windows with transoms and lower casements on the center and left.
The central entrance is framed by a Forest stone doorcase with pilaster strips that are decorated with small carved festoons, creating a pattern of vertical semi-circles, and topped with a pediment that has a shallow moulded cornice. A Liverpool Insurance plaque is situated in the center of the pediment. The door consists of four flush panels and is accessed by two stone steps, with a transom light above that is decoratively glazed with three X's in hexagons. The projecting cross wing has a brick dentil cornice, and internal shutters are preserved in this wing.
