Description
The War Memorial, built in 1917 and designed by Alfred Hoare Powell, commemorates Mabel Dearmer and her son Christopher, as well as the local men who died in the First and Second World Wars.
Constructed from local limestone, the memorial features two water troughs and is flanked by walls at the rear and sides, topped with flat coping stones. In the center stands a tall, square column with a brass tap for drinking, which is adorned with three plaques. The upper plaque lists the names, ranks, regiments, and services of seven individuals who fell during the Second World War. The middle plaque honors Mabel Dearmer, who died in Serbia in 1915, and her son Christopher, who died of wounds at Sulva Bay in Gallipoli the same year. It includes a poignant inscription reflecting on their sacrifices. The lower plaque memorializes twenty-one local men who lost their lives in the First World War.
