Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a parish church built in 1835 by Robert Stokes for Thomas Keble. It is constructed of ashlar limestone and features a concrete tile roof. The church has a nave with a west tower, a south porch, and a chancel. The nave walls are adorned with five tall Early English style lancets, with four on the south side flanking a parapet gabled porch that has a tall moulded pointed archway and a sundial above. The nave also has diagonal buttresses at the parapet gable ends. The chancel's east end features a triplet of lancets beneath a parapet gable, while a single lancet is located on the south side of the chancel.
The three-stage tower is crenellated and has diagonal offset buttresses, with lancet belfry openings that include stone louvres. A tall two-light traceried window with carved hood labels is found on the west side. Inside, the church has a simple limewashed interior with a five-bay truss roof and a ceiling at collar level. The lower exposed parts of the trusses are decorated with bold colors, and similar decoration is found on the panelled ceiling of the chancel. The wide chancel arch features triple shafts, while the tower arch is plain and pointed. An octagonal-fronted stone pulpit in the Early English style and a tall shaft to an octagonal stone font are notable interior features. The east triplet window includes stained glass dating from around 1875.
