Description

A group of five chest tombs is located in the churchyard approximately 3 meters southeast of the south porch of the Church of St. George. These tombs date from the late 17th century to the 18th century and are made of limestone. The group includes two tombs featuring gadrooned corner balusters and moulded rectangular side panels with projecting corners. One of these is inscribed to Thomas Hawker of Uley, a clothier who died in 1794, and the other is inscribed to Susannah, the daughter of Daniel Fowler and wife of Richard Hawker, who died in 1739. Another tomb has acanthus leaves at the bulbous ends and a dentil-enriched top, dated 1670. There is also a tomb with bolection moulded panels and a central oval on the sides and ends, dated 1699. Finally, one tomb features gadrooned corner balusters and anthropomorphic end cartouches, inscribed to Samuel Fowler, who died in 1714.
