Description

Moore Hall is a large, detached dwelling dating to the late 17th century. It is located in Wotton-under-Edge, near Potters Pond. The building is constructed of rendered rubble, with decorative pargetting (applied plasterwork) on the quoins and window surrounds, recently renewed to replicate the original appearance. The roof has stone slate front slopes and concrete tile back slopes, with a deep, coved cornice in plaster. The structure is L-shaped on the front facade and has three gables to the rear. Two stone stacks are present, each with doubled brick top sections set diagonally.

The house has two storeys plus dormers, featuring two and five windows with transom and six-pane glazing. A continuous stone drip mould runs above the ground floor windows. A garage is on the left; the central entrance has a four-panel fielded door with a rectangular, plain glazed fanlight, set beneath a projecting hood supported by scroll brackets.

Inside, a good oak staircase includes a newel post measuring 10 inches by 6 inches. There is a panelled room in the bottom right corner, with fielded panels. The roof structure is of heavy oak, with collar and tie beams but without struts. Many wide, four or six-panel doors from the 18th century are also present.

The gables at the rear of the building were reconstructed in the 19th century using rendered brick. The Moore family were prominent in the town during the 17th and 18th centuries. While a date of 1564 has been suggested for Moore Hall, this does not align with the visible evidence in the building's construction.
