Description
Drakestone Cottages is a pair of dwellings designed by Ernest Grimson in 1909. The cottages are constructed from marlstone rubble and topped with a thatched roof. They are arranged in an L-shape, with a return gable at the left-hand end and half-hipped ends, featuring two chimneys. The buildings are 1½ storeys high and have a total of four windows, including two-light wood casements with bars and one three-light window at the ground floor in the gable. The thatch is raised over two dormers.
The right side has a large plank door, and there is a second entrance in the facade facing the road, along with a modern entrance and outbuilding on the north side. Inside, the cottages retain an original simple oak stair with tight winders, stick balusters, and a flat handrail. The interiors also feature plain stone fire surrounds with mantels, and plank doors fitted with forged latches and fittings.
These cottages are notable examples of 20th-century vernacular architecture, originally built to serve as accommodations for the coachman and gardener of Drakestone House.
