Description
The conduit niche, built around 1860 for Reverend David Edwards, is a Grade II listed structure located in Stancombe Park, North Nibley. It is made of ashlar marlstone and features a limestone font. The niche is square with a round-arched top and imposts. Inside the niche, there is a small round-arched recess that contains a fragment of tessellated pavement, which may be Roman or an imitation. The large circular font bowl sits on a circular base, with a conduit pipe running through the base to feed the font bowl via a drain hole. Water exits the rear of the font through a small outlet in the niche. Opposite the font, across a path, is a semi-circular area of rough marlstone paving with concealed water channels, all supplied by nearby springs. This niche is part of the extensive Regency and early Victorian landscaped park and pleasure garden.
