Description
This is a column monument located approximately 300 meters to the northwest of Stanley Park, built in 1852 for S.S. Marling. It features a granite column and pedestal, with a limestone base. The tall monolithic fluted Ionic column is topped with a capital and stands on a pedestal. There are chamfered steps leading to the large square base. The southeast side of the pedestal is inscribed with the following text: 'THIS COLUMN/FROM THE/CHELSEWERING GRANITE QUARRIES/NEAR LISKEARD CORNWALL/STOOD AT THE WESTERN END/OF THE/GREAT EXHIBITION IN LONDON/1851/AND WAS PLACED HERE/BY/SAMUEL STEPHENS MARLING/1852'. It is said to commemorate one of Marling's horses.
