Description

The Old Fleece Inn is a former coaching inn that originated as two houses in the mid 18th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble limestone and features ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two stories tall with an attic.

The front of the building has a gabled section on the right, displaying a four-window arrangement and two gables. The windows are mid 19th century, three-light casements with mullions, featuring 4-centred arched heads and hoodmoulds. Each gable has a three-light attic casement. The central doorway is Tudor arched, also with a hoodmould, and has double panelled doors. The gable end chimneys are made of ashlar and have moulded caps.

To the left, there is another section with a central Tudor arched doorway, hoodmould, and a four-panel door. This part has three-window fenestration, with a three-light window to the left, a two-light window above the door, and another two-light window to the right, all featuring 4-centred arched heads and hoodmoulds. There are two gabled roof dormers mounted on the eaves. At the north end, there is a single-storey projecting wing. The rear of the building is built into a bank. The Old Fleece Inn has been recorded as an inn since 1870 and is illustrated in a depiction from 1797 in N.M. Herbert's work on Rodborough.
