Description
Springfield Cottage and Mulberry Cottage is a detached cottage, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the early 18th century. It features an ashlar front with squared and coursed limestone returns and a stone slate roof. The building has an L-plan layout, with a later addition within the angle. It is two storeys high with an attic and has three windows. The central entrance has a glazed door set beneath a deep lintel, with a stepped drip-course above, flanked by 3-light casements on either side. The first floor has a symmetrical arrangement of 3:2:3-light casements, all with recessed chamfered mullions. There are also two gabled dormers with 2-light windows. To the right, there is an ashlar stack with capping, while a concrete block stack is located on the left. The large back wings are not of special interest. Inside, there is a peaked head opening opposite the entry and a fine straight staircase with a heavy handrail, uncut string, and turned balusters. The cottage is situated along a stretch of the former road from the north, which has since been bypassed by the A46.
